Highlights of ICTO Work in 2022

In accordance with the University’s Five-Year Development Plan, especially in light of the growing number of users and increasing use of ICT services, ICTO has begun upgrading related systems and accelerating the replacement of network equipment to reduce the mismatch between user expectations and performance constraints. ICTO continues to provide stable and reliable services to staff and students and to improve ICT facilities and services. Some highlights are listed below:

The wireless network coverage for both indoor and outdoor area reached 92% and 38% respectively. 900 access points were installed/extended in year 2022 to improve the signal coverage, especially on building entries.

To meet the demand for more ICT services and users, Internet download bandwidth was increased from 7.0 Gbps to 10.0 Gbps, an increase of 42.86% compared with 2021.

  1. AV System Upgrade (Rooms: E6-3092 & E6-3093)
  2. Computer Table Replacement (Rooms: E6-3092)
  3. Printing Area Improvement (Location: E6 G/F Learning Commons)

The exchange programme application process has now been streamlined so that students can apply for exchange programme and grant online, and administrators can manage the application process through the same platform.

New system has been developed for stakeholders to monitor PIDDA projects by enabling departmental users to collaboratively manage budgetary information, schedule, and execution progress.

New system provides more features such as issuing bulletin through web browser, mobile devices support, draft saving, scheduling and highly integrated with unit’s web site. It enhances work efficiency and improves user experience.

Our Help Desk received a total of 13,388 daily support service calls, of which 99% were resolved within service target. In addition, the support hours of Help Desk have been extended since October 2022, primarily to support for classes in ICTO computer rooms and answer general enquiries. Details on service calls statistics can be found here.

Forecast for 2023 Key Tasks

With the opening after the epidemic, life is resuming to normal. In 2023, ICTO will increase its focus on replacing ICT equipment that are end of support, increasing the capacity of systems to cope with the increasing number of users and usage, and also upgrading systems whose technologies have become obsolete. Here are some highlights:

To provide a mobile platform for integrating various applications within UM, with the goal of creating a single mobile App that every UM member must have. 1st phase will focus on student services.

To accelerate wireless network upgrade by replacing more than 2,000 access points to support WiFi 6 standard and improve performance.

To increase total download bandwidth by 30%, with dynamic bandwidth allocation.

To expand storage capacity by more than 30% to over 3PB to support the increasing number of users and usage.

To continually introduce 2FA in various ICT services and strengthen server and endpoint protection.
