2024 is a year of remarkable progress and important milestones that have not only improved the technological landscape of information services but also promoted a new mobile platform for accessing UM services. Our team successfully implemented several key projects aimed at modernizing our infrastructure and improving service delivery.
Highlights of ICTO Work in 2024:
The UM App offers a comprehensive suite of 23 services, support 13 mobile payments, and has over 13,000 installations.
- The wireless network coverage for both indoor and outdoor area reached 93% and 43% respectively. 3,100 access points were installed in year 2024 and support Wi-Fi 7 standard. “One room one AP” has been installed for most residential colleges and postgraduate houses.
- The ‘FreeWiFi.MO by UM’ SSID is now available and allows public visitors to access the Internet at the library.
- Internet bandwidth was increased from 13.0 Gbps to 17.0 Gbps, an increase of 30% compared with 2023.
- Server farm switches were upgraded, increasing the switching capacity of the networks from 1.92 Tbps to 4.5 Tbps.
- All-in-one firewalls were deployed to implement network security and optimize bandwidth allocation.
- Successfully upgraded to ISO27001:2022 (Information Security Management System) certification.
- New modular UPS was installed in the secondary data center to ensure non-stop operation and thus the stability of ICT services.
The Microsoft Copilot service has been adopted as one of the Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools at UM.
- New Student Stipend System centralizes the management of assistantship records and academic activities, creating a unified platform for faculty and finance users.
- New Student Debit Note System allows students to view their payment transactions, download and settle their debit notes through online payment.
- New Course Add/Drop, Course Pre-enrollment and Section List enhanced the user experience for both staff and students in course management, offering a more efficient and mobile-friendly solution.
- New UM PhoneBook System offers an adaptive interface accessible on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices via web browser and UM App.
- New Campus Tour Online Application System delivers a mobile-friendly user interface and engaging experience for public users.
- New Event Registration System allows participants to seamlessly register for events on mobile devices.
- The “QR Access” feature has been enabled on the UM App for students and staff to simply use the QR code from to enter designated entrances in buildings E4, E6 and S1 to S4, without using a campus card.
- The new generation of MacauPass multi-purpose photocopiers has been adopted at G/F E6 Learning Commons. It supports the mobile payment method – MPay to pay the printing charges.
- New IT Service Management System provides a more concise layout for users to submit, track and manage their IT support and service applications online easily.
- ICTO Help Desk Counter has been renovated to provide a green, interactive leisure space for staff and students.
- Device encryption and protection for removable devices were implemented and user permissions were also optimized to enhance security defenses and reduce the impact of information security incidents.
- External email tagging was implemented to increase awareness of phishing email threats and to identify emails originating from outside.
- New Vulnerability Management Tool was implemented on-premises to manage vulnerabilities for over 400 servers. This tool provides proactive scanning to identify potential weaknesses that cybercriminals might exploit.
- New PC Data Recovery system was deployed for staff PCs. In the first phase, over 900 PC devices and more than 300 TB of data on those PCs are secure and protected.

Forecast for 2025 Key Tasks:
Looking the future, our focus continues to be the use of technology to support University’s strategic objects. Key areas include:
Deepening the development of electronic services to meet with the development and expansion of University – To improve and strengthen the functions of UM App, new PG housing management system, new eRecruitment system, streamline payment-related processes by enhancing and integrating Expense Claim System, ePR System and Student Stipend System, and continue to support E-Government projects.
Optimizing ICT facilities to cater the growing number of users and usage – To complete the upgrade of campus network, equip each student hostel room with an AP, upgrade HPCC for research purposes and replace computers for staff.
Support the operation of Teaching Center and the construction of ICZ Campus – To establish a network connection with Teaching Center to enable seamless ICT usage as on current campus, propose and review the requirements and design of ICT facilities of ICZ campus, work closely with the relevant departments and confirm the requirement of information systems for ICZ campus.
Strengthening information security to have reliable and secure ICT services – To adopt patch and vulnerability management, improve cross-department communication, proactively monitor and respond to potential threats.
